Greta Schneider

Glass Artist – Aurora, Oregon

I have done art all of my life. I was an art major in college and worked as an illustrator and commercial artist for the St. Pete Times newspaper and the City of St. Pete News Bureau in Florida. After moving to Oregon in the mid 70’s I became a jewelry designer, goldsmith, and loved cutting stones. I continue to do and sell my lapidary work. I also did fine art gourds and pastels at different times. I have always loved the gorgeous coloring in glass and how it catches light and was especially interested in using the beautiful dichroic glass to try some jewelry…..and once I tried it I was hooked! I have created dichroic jewelry for over 25 years now but I love trying all types of fused glass techniques and particularly like working in powder and frits (crushed glass) and also painting birds, animals and nature using high fire glass enamels. Enamels require several firings which last many hours each. Fused glass techniques can be planned and controlled to a large extent…but each piece really takes shape in the kiln….and what happens is all based on the effects of heat, time and gravity! It is a very challenging and time consuming art form….but never boring and very satisfying in so many ways. I love that my glass work makes so many people smile.
