Pamela Burkland, Recherche’s designer, began repurposing vintage Japanese Obi sashes into elegant shoulder bags in 2005. For years prior to starting Recherche, she had created children’s costumes and clothing, slipcovers, draperies, and at one point 65% of her own corporate wardrobe. Recherche bags sold for 12 years at The Real Mother Goose/Changes, a wearable arts mecca in downtown Portland, prior to the stores close in 2015. . Shows and exhibits up and down the west coast have been ongoing for Recherche since 2009 and Obi Bags have been showcased in Ornament Magazine and in Niche Magazine. Recherche bags are limited-edition, one of a kind, hand-made shoulder bags with the Obis sourced directly from Japan. Vintage to antique buttons and objets d’art are used as closures/embellishments, creating a singular piece of wearable art for the woman with a singularly fearless elan. No two bags are ever exactly alike.
