Project Description

Yastrid Gulbrandson

Artist — West Linn, Oregon

I was born in the Faeroe Islands which is part of Denmark. The Faeroe Islands are self-governing with their own currency and their own language. After graduating from high school, I went to nurses training in Denmark and received an equivalent of an LPN. Then I moved to Iceland and worked in a hospital where I used my nurses training. At the age of 24, I moved to Oregon to keep my sister company because her husband had been sent on a long-term assignment for the government. It was in Oregon that I met my future husband who was a physical education teacher. We were married and I became a resident of Oregon. After my two sons were older, I began to explore my interest in drawing and painting. I took drawing and painting classes in the Portland area using colored pencil. I met the watercolor artist, Susan McKinnon, and began to take formal classes from her. Susan was my primary teacher and mentor. Later I became a member of a group of Lake Oswego artists who worked primarily in watercolor. My subjects range from still life floral arrangements, pictures of boats and harbors, images of children and animals. I am especially attracted to painting subjects around water where I can capture reflections.
